The project
Baba artzine is an experimental graphic publishing project started up in early 2011 by the graphic designer, draughtsman and photographer Àngel Ordax Güell and the visual artist Frank Peris Llorach. We are an independent magazine focused on promoting young emerging art and we believe that as visual communicators we need a way to share the message, the statement and the core of an art piece with the public.
For that reason we follow a curatorial procedure for each issue as our intention is to create a kind of exhibition that doesn’t need a wall and therefore it has a published format. We do what we call an “artzine”, an experimental publishing object that tries to be in the middle between the artist’s book, the magazine and the essay. We endeavor to explore new formats in the fields of humanities and visual arts because we think it’s time to break the standards and look forward for the best suitable way to achieve our goal.
We try to publish three times a year in which we also plan other ways of bringing the academic and the “real” world together doing things like real exhibitions, workshops, speeches and any kind of collaboration we can came across with other graphic producers or industry beholders. Our aim is to create a network of young talented people with passion and commitment about our present scene as critical thinkers and producers.
How we do it
Each new issue of Baba artzine is subedited to a main theme that also serves as a title. Sometimes though, the title doesn’t come up at the beginning of the planning, as for our second number, it could happen that this main topic appears as we go further in our investigations while we’re looking for the contents.
Our work then is to be “catalizers”, leaders of a whole content assimilation process that at the end becomes a meaning’s box that reacts to a common idea.
